FP7 MD

  • Main research target: develop an international community around new theory, practices and tools able to construct a socially sustainable future – tools relying on SNA and Visual Analytics.
  • Budget: 178K euros managed by INRIA / total budget unknown
  • Use of resources: 6 months PhD; 1 year post-doc; travel expenses.

I act as scientific coordinator for INRIA. My expertise is relevant in two distinct work packages, one dealing with theoretical models of innovation, the other begin concerned with the use of social network analysis and visual analytics aiming at the construction of a pilot.

FP7 INSITE

  • Period: 2011 – 2013
  • Call FP7 FET Coordinated Action
  • Project title – and acronym: Innovation Sustainability and Technology – INSITE
  • Main research target: investigating whether Western society's innovation processes and its dependence on them might lie at the root of the sustainability crises – raising interesting questions that could be answered using SNA.

My participation to INSITE is linked with my activities as part of MD (MD is a spin-off of INSITE). INSITE focuses on networking activities between partners (meetings, workshops).

INRIA ARC DyVi

  • Period: 2010 – 2012

  • Project title – and acronym: Visualisation de grands graphes dynamiques – DyVi
  • Main research target: study the evolution of dynamic networks, from the perspective of propagation; develop relevant visualization approaches dealing with large dynamic graphs; focus on the spread of infectious diseases.
  • Budget: 30K euros targeted at INRIA GRAVITE / total project budget 136K euros.

ANR TANGUY

  • Project title – and acronym: Des Textes aux Arguments par Navigation Graphique de l'Utilisateur en Interaction – TANGUY
  • Main research target: combine natural processing techniques together with indexation based on semantic networks approaches, all delivered through intuitive visual represetations, to support information retrieval and decision making in legal contexts (processing court rulings).
  • Budget: 271K euros managed by INRIA / total project budget 895K euros

I acted as scientific coordinator for INRIA. The project gave us a good opportunity to expand and validate Tulip's perspective-based approach, and develop innovative representations for text documents using an underlying graph structure to ease navigation.

  • Main research target: design genuine techniques to support the visual exploration and analysis of rule-based modeling systems (graph rewriting rules).

I acted as scientific coordinator for INRIA, together with my colleague Bruno Pinaud. Although the INRIA funding is now over, the project still goes on and PORGY turned into a spin-off software emerging from Tulip.

ANR SysTryp

  • Period: 2007 – 2010
  • ANR Call BioSys FR–UK
  • Project title – and acronym: – Metabolomic systems biology analysis of differentiation in trypanosomes. SysTryp.
  • Main research target: study the relationship between metabolism and cellular differentiation in the protozoan Trypanosoma brucei, by collecting high resolution mass spectrometry data and reconstructing networks based on this data; determine relationships between static and dynamic networks by visualising metabolic network modules that associate with differentiation.
  • Budget: 89K euros managed by INRIA / total project budget 300K euros

I acted as scientific coordinator for INRIA. The project gave us the opportunity to test several approaches to deal with dynamic networks, animating networks according to the associated cell processes. Some results can be seen on Tulip's website.

  • Main research target: compare different visualization modes (two graph layouts versus text) and assess of their impact at a cognitive level (using a graph built from spontaneous word associations).

I triggered the idea of putting up the CIGOGNE consortium. I did not appear as principal investigator of the CIGOGNE proposal simply because I was still part of CWI in Amsterdam when writing the proposal. I was then part of the CIGOGNE project as a member of LIRMM, after I was appointed University professor in Montpellier (09/2000).

So officially, I acted as scientific coordinator for LIRMM. See the final report.
