DESCRIPTION:Quantum error correction (QEC) and quantum error mitigation (QE
 M) are\nthe two most popular techniques to deal with errors occurring duri
 ng a\nquantum computation.\nQEC comes with a polynomial asymptotic overhea
 d in terms of qubit and\ngate count\, but the overhead is massive in pract
 ice. For example\, the\nfactorization of RSA-2\,048 may require surface co
 des using 1\,457\nphysical qubits per logical qubit. QEM is already used i
 n today’s\nmachines because it consumes only few or no extra qubits. Howev
 er\, it is\nnot a viable solution for large quantum circuits because the s
 ampling\ncost\, i.e.\, the number of circuit executions required\, general
 ly grows\nexponentially with the size of the circuit.\nIn this work\, we p
 ropose a scheme that fills the gap between the regime\nof QEC and QEM. Thi
 s Clifford noise reduction (CliNR) scheme reduces the\nlogical error rate 
 of Clifford circuits in practically relevant regimes\,\nand it does so at 
 the price of comparatively small overheads. It can be\nmade universal toge
