This produces a layout enhancement effect as shadows then play the role of negative halos.

Glossy ‘n tasty

One may ask “how tasty” a substance is, which really means “how rich in tase”. But this is a limited characterization, reduced to a single all-encompassing dimension.

One may then try to characterize taste in terms in (proximal) features: salty, sour, sweet, bitter, dull, etc. This is like looking at image features of gloss, like sharpness, contrast, coverage, color, etc.

However, taste is arguable more complex than a collection/combination of tongue features. For instance, oenologists use references to fruits or spices to characterize wine in tasting. What help them make that connection? A succession of tongue features? Passive or active?

There’s a difference between a wine reminding of fruits and the actual taste of fruits of course. The same occurs with paintings of glossy objects, or even objects that remind other (more common) ones, like a flower having a satiny, velvety or metallic look.

One possibility is that features occur in combination with other substance properties, like texture or shape, and we’re sensitive to these correlations.

Vision regimes Vision during locomotion or object inspection or contremplation greatly differ.
