The crowd gets a fluid-like behavioral appearance, which is due to the constraints acting upon each creature due to its immediate neighbors (most often in front). Examine the collective flow models; what about simple push-pull reactions?

Only when a creature is pushed away from the boundary and tries to come back in does animacy strikes back. Hence, could animacy be explained by the occurence of motion not tied to any neighbor motion? Perhaps in crowds of similar elements (like the leaves in a tree)…

But what about a rolling ball or a falling branch? They are not usually related to any motion in their surroundings. Such motion events could be said to be characterized by an apparent loss of energy, which has no reason to be monotonic. Still, what would differentiate an inert rolling ball from one remote controlled, imparting its own motion, and hence looking alive?

On the contrary, are there animals that actually mimick inert motions / inanimate behaviors to fool predators? Dancers may imitate this loss of animacy, hence giving precious insights about which tricks cancel which cues to animacy. It might be due to the vertical upward motion of the substance, but then any video of a falling object played backward would look alive (it rather looks unnatural). There is something else in the erratic yet seemingly voluntary motion in these fluids.

Time lapses of plants may also occasionaly give impressions of motion with a purpose. Carnivorous plants are the obvious example, but any plant growing toward the sun gives an impression of goal-directed alive motion.

Loosing animacy Creatures might loose the appearance of animacy when gathered in crowds, such as flocks of birds or schools of fishes.
