Only if I pay close attention to the content of the visual field (like researchers or artists do) will I be aware of some of these cues. Why is the holistic perception soeffortless, while the identification of cues requires so much more attention (maybe even learning)?

Of course it makes sense evolutionary-speaking: fast, holistic impressions are much more useful in an ecological context… Maybe we are simply not aware of all the cues from which the holistic impression emerges; we need to consciously direct our attention to see them. What I then fail to understand is how the holistic approach can be so fast, while the cues it relies on seem to require much slower, controlled observation? More precisely, identifying relevant cues requires several good looks (i.e., fixations), which is too long compared to the holistic impression sometimes obtained at a glimpse.

My personal (current) intuition is that we should stop considering perception as a “one-shot” process, and instead study its dynamics. The holistic impression that first emerges may thus be a quick summary based on an incomplete set of cues; just enough to move away or carry on with observation. The way incomplete cues combine and reinforce themselves might thus be more important at first sight; besides, they are redundant in most ecological situations. With a prolonged observation (something most people don’t do very often), one might spend more time inspecting how different cues are laid out and related to each other. I’ve recently been wondering how such perception dynamics could be effectively studied in practice; maybe by combining eye tracking and image manipulations? In the language of your paper, I think it would be awesome if we could study how different regions get activated across time and observers depending on the task.

It might occur that some aspects of the object shape or material have been overlooked during the first glimpse, but we are not usually surprised by this. I think the new aspects are most often “nested” in the first holistic impression: they do not contradict but complement the perceptual state of the object in the mind. On rarer occasions, there might be a contradiction, either as the result of an intentional design (e.g., in illusions or art), or an evolutionary one (e.g., camouflage). One last question (promised) is whether surprise could be used to analyze when and how the dynamical perception process breaks and is forced to bifurcate. I used the idea of “bifurcation” intentionally: maybe there’s a parallel to be made with attractors in physics; but I realize I probably went a bit too far with speculations 😉

[K] I think EEG MEG +fMRI might be the best combination of tools to get a handle at that, but simple reaction time paradigms might tell us sth too. The question is : WHAT do we perceive (or what is registered) at the holistic stage (this might be getting into iconic memory stuff as well).

In the outlook section of your COBEHA paper, you stress that “how holistic impressions emerge” should be a central topic of research; of course I agree ;-).
