In terms of attractor dynamics, a small set of predictors might be sufficient to reach a stable attractor.

By paying closer attention (hence making refined predictions through an increased number of saccades), one may revise his or her perception. Contours may be realized to be more complex than the first glimpses have revealed. For instance, a subtle occlusion of the background may suggest a fold in the cloth of the character, where it was expected to be devoid of such shape feature. More accurately, we might say that whether a fold was present or not was unspecified, and actually not part of the visual investigation. Asking to identify the folds might then trigger new predictors, relying on relevant contour cues, and revealing the shape feature that will seamlessly blend into the stream of consciousness, as if it had been part of it all along… which is in my view an essential aspect of Psychogenesis.

Impossible figures such as in M. C. Escher’s artwork are interesting in that they interrupt this flow of coherent perception, making the subject take notice of his or her own psychogenesis as it becomes shaky. In terms of attractor dynamics, no stable state is reached, and multiple attractors are landed upon depending on the sequence of predictors used on a part of the image. This creates surprise first, and then confusion, two interesting tools to study Psychogenesis.

Vanishing figures The silhouettes of “vanishing” figures (see Koenderink papers) do not need to be checked in their entirety to reach a perceptually stable interpretation.
