With the proliferation of so-called ‘generative AI’, many questions are being asked about the replacement of artists by computer systems. This conference-debate, held on 12 October at the Utopia cinema, was an excellent opportunity to present the various issues, challenges, risks and opportunities presented by the multiplicity of generative tools in the artistic professions.
Thierry Murat, comic strip author, presented his artistic approach to the creation of his comic strip, created entirely using prompts (a truly impressive piece of artistic work). We looked at the problems of creative rights (in Europe and internationally); the reception of booksellers in a world where publishing a work (graphic or otherwise) is becoming much easier (too easy?); the history of artistic creation turned upside down by each new technology and its resilience.
Finally, with Antoine JeanJean, we explained what was going on behind the prompts and machine learning, how these systems train themselves on data in defiance of copyright (often) and, finally, how these systems have no will of their own, no goals, no common sense, no notion of what is real - despite some superb quality productions.
A truly fascinating evening!
