Pint of Science

Mysterious files, AI that outpaces the law, data traveling everywhere...
Two scientists, Nicolas Rougier (Research Director at Inria and the IMN—Institute for Neurodegenerative Diseases) and Mélanie Romano (Ph.D. candidate at Inria and the IMN), take you behind the scenes of modern surveillance with humor and insight.
See you next May.
On the agenda: breaking down technologies, untangling regulations, and answering all your questions about this world where Black Mirror meets reality!

Two highlights and two dates to mark on your calendar:

* May 19 / Nicolas Rougier: “Why Is Your Cat So Bad at Chess?”
Unlike artificial intelligence, your cat is absolutely terrible at chess. And yet, it’s smarter than the very latest AI systems. The difference? It has a body that allows it to experience the world and learn. This fundamental difference has two immediate consequences: you won’t be able to transfer your mind into a machine, and general AI isn’t coming anytime soon.

* May 20 / Mélanie Romano: “Big Brother Desperately Seeks Regulation
Surveillance technologies are advancing at breakneck speed: massive data collection, artificial intelligence, interconnection of files... Meanwhile, laws are struggling to keep pace. The result? Increasingly powerful tools, but rules that are sometimes inadequate and don’t always measure the real impact of these technologies on our lives and our democracy. How can we classify and evaluate them objectively? What are their cumulative effects? My research combines computer science and law to shed light on a world where technology is advancing faster than the law.
