Digital technology is now an integral part of our world. The school is no exception to the rule by incorporating its use in its programs.
However, there is still a dissociation between activities involving physical content and digital activities. Students have the choice of doing the activity in a group around a table without digital content, or they can work in front of a computer (screen, keyboard and mouse), but without manipulating the content to be learned simultaneously in groups, making the student less active. This thesis project aims to explore a third way, by proposing in an educational context systems that blur the barriers between the digital and physical world. The final objective of this work is to propose systems that allow students to perform manual activities while having access to the digital world, within the same environment. To achieve such results, we have developed several systems allowing users to interact with the virtual world via physical objects such as paper, books, notebooks and physical objects. A first exploration of this vision is CARDS (*Collaborative Activities based on the Real and the Digital Superposition*).
CARDS is a mixed reality system that combines physical and digital objects within the same physical workspace to support active and collaborative learning. CARDS uses paper as a physical medium for digital documents. Paper maps host virtual documents such as text, video, image or sound. Users can freely manipulate the cards on a table, allowing for physical and active engagement in the task. Different objects are proposed to support activities such as sorting (grouping, spatialization, clustering) and mind mapping.
