Seminar given by Frédéric Alexandre, Director of Research, Inria/Université de Bordeaux. Title of his talk: "A few elements for understanding how ChatGPT works".

In recent months, the release of conversational agents such as ChatGPT has had a major impact not only on Artificial Intelligence research, but also on the way AI is perceived by the general public. Because of its impressive results, some people are wondering whether this agent is as intelligent as we are, whether it can replace us, or even whether it has a conscience. But also because of the rather crude mistakes it makes, people are wondering whether it should not be used under certain conditions. To answer such questions, it may be useful to have a better understanding of how ChatGPT works. This could then give rise to a debate between us on the potential of such tools and the potential uses that could be made of them.
